Barry Cade was first introduced to the works of

Thomas Hardy at the age of 14: “The Trumpet Major”

was his O’ level examination text and he was hooked

from then on. He went on to teach all the main Hardy

texts across a 30 year career in Education as a teacher

of English and subsequently as Headmaster of a

Midlands comprehensive school.

Over many years he has regularly been invited

to act as guest speaker on a wide range of Hardy

related topics to various literary societies and arts

organisations. He visited Dorset every summer for

several years, gradually accumulating information

about Hardy’s locations and taking hundreds of

photographs in the process.

After retiring in the late 1990s, he went to live for a

year in Bere Regis right at the heart of Hardy country

and devoted much of that time to identifying and

photographing yet more locations and settings that

Hardy used or may well have used as his models.

These annotated pictures are, therefore, very much

the fruits of a long labour of love and it had always

been the author’s intention to eventually share this

material with other devotees and enthusiasts when

time finally allowed him to do so.
